AKILI is a U.S.-registered non-profit (501c3) research and training organization established to inspire and empower African agribusiness professionals of today and tomorrow.

Akili is a Swahili word for knowledge and wisdom. Our mission is to connect African youth and professionals with the world’s leading research universities, corporations, and policymakers. In exchange, African agribusiness youth and professionals will share their knowledge and wisdom with the rest of the world. Win-Win.

Introducing the AKILI Somalia Mogadishu Lab

(Note: "IDP" stands for "Internally Displaced Persons" - essentially refugees in their own country who have fled their homes and villages)

The Somali people have suffered for many years. We have seen the images: Black Hawk Down, civil war, famine, and terrorism have caused millions to flee their country as refugees, while millions remain in the country, hostages to terrorists and the resulting economic and social isolation. This is truly a heart-breaking situation.

They are truly an inspiring, resilient people. We have been asked to assist with the post-conflict economic plan, and we are now working on this, together with many collaborators in Somalia and around the world, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Africa Resilience Project. Our shared view is that agriculture, along with education and infrastructure, is the key to unlocking Somalia's bright and exciting future.

Help us rewrite the next chapter of this story.

The Juma Family

The Juma Family

"Rural poverty is associated with factors such as poor infrastructure and logistics, inappropriate education and low skill levels, inadequate levels of capital investment in new businesses, and lack of access to markets for new products and services.  Solving these challenges will contribute to the creation of meaningful jobs for the youth and for women.  Priority areas include nurturing creativity, advancing experiential learning, fostering computing and data analytics, promoting  agricultural innovation,  applying medical technology, and protecting the environment."(December, 2017)
